National Award winning Malayalam movie and India’s official entry for
the Academy award ‘Adaminte Makan Abu’ has not found its way to the top
nine short list for the best film.
Adaminte Makan Abu/Abu Son of Adam
directed by Salim Ahamed draws the life of a man whose ambition is to
perform the ritual “Hajj”. The movie was among the first 63 entries
under the category of Best foreign film screened by the Oscar
committee in the first phase.
According to the statement on the
official website of Oscar, the nine movies that have been shortlisted
are ‘Bullhead’ from Belgium, ‘Monsieur Lazhar’ from Canada,
‘Superclasico’ from Denmark, ‘Pina’ from Germany, ‘Footnote’ from
Israel, ‘In Darkness’ from Poland, ‘Omar Killed Me’ from Morocco and
‘Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale’ from Taiwan. These films will
be further scrutinized by the selected committees in New York and Los
Angeles.
The committee will gather this weekend to view
these films again and to cast their ballots.
The only remaining hope for India is on ‘ Dam 999’ directed by Sohan
Roy which deals with dam destruction and is being screened among the
265 nominees contesting for the best film. Also, three songs of the
movie are shortlisted among the 39 songs competing for the original
score category.
However the final list of the nominees for the race will only be
announced on January 24. The final Oscar presentation ceremony will
take place on February 26 at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles.
