The movie “Mullassery Madhavankutty Nemom PO” is the story of a typical government servant who leads an ordinary life like other government employees, living with the limited income and making both ends just meet. Wanting to do something different, he comes out with a huge dream, a dream normally not even thought of by anyone, but one which everyone can relate to. Madhavankutty’s efforts and the outcome are unfolded in the movie.
As is the habit with most Malayalam family flicks, the film has two distinct halves, the first one full of rollicking stuff and the second half sobbing stuff. First half has plenty of comedy enacted by a plethora of artists which tends to bring down the storyline and makes you lose track of the scene. The story rings a familiar tone and there are no big surprises, no suspense, no twists in the tale.
The cast has Anoop Menon playing Madhavankutty who has given an outstanding performance once again following “Traffic” and “Beautiful’. Surely higher things are waiting for him. Sonal Devraj is the heroine and she manages the rather limited role of hers admirably. Other actors have done their roles efficiently without much to write home about.
What is worth mentioning is the phenomenal quality of the musical numbers. “Pathi Mayum Chandrika’, written by Girish Puthanchery and composed by Raveendran, both of whom have sadly left us, and rendered by Yesudas has been included in the movie to pay homage to these two geniuses. Rest of the songs are tuned by Ratheesh Vega whose cocktail movie songs are already well known. There aren't any gimmicks at play here; instead there are genuine delights that come by way of that tight script by Swathy Bhasker that succeeds on some terms. Art director is Anish Kollam and editing is done by Prejish Prakash; both are fine.
Considering that Mullassery Madhavan Kutty Nemam P.O comes from Kumar Nanda, it is a good effort, one of the movies worth watching this season. As it is, it has a few real people, a few funny scenes and a few real insights, which is infinitely more than we could bargain for these days. In short, Mullassery Madhavan Kutty Nemam P.O has all the ingredients needed to make it a watchable family flick.

Verdict: Average.
