The message conveyed by this movie is clear; it is, most often noticed, at the fag-end of one’s humour that the artist within emerges. And Ranbir Kapoor portraying the role of Janardhan Jakhar was, unfortunately, born in a very normal family and lived a very regular life. So what can he do to inflict pain upon himself and become the star he always wanted to be?
Well, the most guaranteed and error-free method, flirt with a heart-breaking beautiful damsel. Hopefully, she will soon dump him and agonise him; and soon he will rise as a rock star just like a phoenix that rises from its own ashes. So he flirts with Heer Kaul aka Nargis Fakhri. They spend a lot of time together doing a number of wild stuff and finally end up great friends.
Well, for Heer, rightly said, Janardhan was just a friend. But when Heer was getting ready to get married, JJ crashes in and expresses his true feelings for her. He was in love. Heer, indifferent to his sentiments, rejected him, got married and flew to Prague with her husband. JJ, thrown out of the wedding and hungry, finally lands at a dargah. They also taught Sufi music for the underprivileged. His experience there, lead him to start singing bhajans for a living.
After a few good opportunities, he gains his share of recognition and starts having his own concerts. On one occasion, he had to travel to Prague for a recording. During his performances there, he gets to bond once again with his lady love. They get intimate. To make things worse, Heer is diagnosed with acute bone marrow and you can imagine what follows thereon.
The policy to follow when you watch this movie; DO NOT THINK! If you are looking for just pure entertainment without any pressure on the mind, this is just the right place to be.
All this said, A.R.Rahmaan has received a number of accolades for his music in Rock Star. I have always been a fan of Rahman, but I have to say that his music is getting a little clichéd these days. Irrespective of the movie or the theme, his music is always in one genre. The peppy Rock Star numbers were missing in the movie.
It is a pleasure to watch its post-production and awe-inspiring cinematography though. The camera captures fantastically, the beautiful scenery and landscapes of the East European Countryside.
VERDICT : Just pure entertainment, a lot of masala and drama; thats short for Rock Star!
