“Unnam” the latest film directed by Sibi Malayil, is facing the prospect of becoming another flop as the reports from all the centers in the state are very negative.
Remaking a Bollywood film and forcing it on the Malayalee audience has probably caused this tragedy.
Swathi Bhaskar’s screenplay of “Unnam” is based on the 2007 Hindi release “Johny Gaddar”, and the Malayalam movie is directed by Sibi Malayil. The characters and the situations are totally alien for the Malayalee to come to terms with and with this self made trap, “Unnam” is sliding fast into the basket of flopped films. With the failure of the screenplay and direction, the film is expected to cause heavy loss to the producer.
Sunny(Lal), Aloshi(Asif Ali), Murugan(Nedumudi Venu), Tommy(Prasanth Narayanan), and Basheer(Nowshi) are all semi-retired criminals who decide on a final try to get rich. For their criminal act, they get the help of a policeman Balakrishnan(Sreenivasan) and the story goes on.
The characters fail to create any impression and they just seem to go through the motions. The exception is Lal who tries his best to bring some life to the movie. Asif Ali’s performance is dismal and may not help to add to his star value. The arrival of Sreenivasan does not bring down the ennui either, probably because it is too much of a task even for Sreenivasan. Rima Kallingal and Shwetha Menon in the female roles do not have much to contribute nor were they given any opportunity to perform. Prasanth Narayanan, Murder2 fame's performance turns highlight.
And the less said about the music, the better for all concerned. The failure of “Unnam” and “Asuravithu” earlier, questions the title of Star Prince bestowed on Asif Ali.
Verdict : Easily Avoidable
