Politician turned director M A Nishad had been instrumental in creating serious movies that always stood for a social cause. His previous movies like 'Pakal', 'Nagaram' and 'Aayudham' narrated some unhealthy practices that our hypocritical society has been politicising and practicing for some time. His latest 'Vairam' which is planned for this Ramzan is one such movie influenced by some real incidents.
Scripted by Cheriyaan Kalpakavaady, 'Vairam' is all about a father's plight for justice. The movie will feature Tamil actor Pasupathy as Sivarajan, a bank employee who worked in a branch of a rural bank. The character who is Tamilian by birth is happily married to Devi (Meera Vasudev). They have a daughter Vairamani, a plus two student who is very close to her dad and with whom she shares her every day experiences.
Accidentally she becomes a victim to some horrific happenings and is molested by some who enjoys money and political power. Sivarajan who himself have to take trail of the evading culprits now approaches Ravi Varma (Suresh Gopi), a firebrand lawyer, who takes up the case with support from Annie Jacob, the reporter of a popular magazine. As the case gradually becomes sensational following the death of the victim, the government is also forced to assign D S P of Crime Branch Thomas Eeraali to probe into the issue. The movie follows this socially relevant issue and will offer plenty of references to a dozen of similar recent cases pending before courts.
The movie has a big star cast including Suresh Gopi, Mukesh, Jayasuriya, Thilakan, K P A C Laitha and Kalabhavan Mani. While Dhanya who debuted through 'Thalappavu' plays Vairamani, Samvarutha Sunil is Annie Jacob.
Cheriyan Kalpakavady who find interests only in handling serious themes of this nature had been the writer of two other films like 'Banaras' and 'Bharya Swantham Suhurthu', which came out this year. 'Vairam' will discuss the plight of girl child in contemporary Kerala society. It will be an eye opener to everyone who must release that it is high time, the law must be enacted and reformed to end the worries of parents, who are hit with similar tragedies inflicted by affluent forces. The movie cinematographed by Sanjeev Sankar will have songs set by M Jayachandran in the lyrics by Girish Puthencherry.
'Vairam' is being produced by N Siva Rao under the banner Cinema NSR India. The movie released in theatres on Sep20,Sunday.
Pasupathy delivers an excellent performance as Sivarajan and wins our appreciation and touches our hearts. Suresh Gopi is his very usual self. Mukesh does a convincing job. Jayasurya impresses us as Josekutty. Dhanya Mary (of 'Thalappavu' fame) is good as Vairamani. Meera Vasudev is good. Thilakan and KPAC Lalitha are first rate. All the others in the cast have done justice to their respective roles. Cinematography (by Sanjeev Shankar), art work (by Gireesh Menon) and editing (by Samjith) are very much in sync with the mood and the theme of the film. Gireesh Puthencherry and M.Jayachandran have teamed up once again to give us some good songs, the best of them being 'Vennilavu....', rendered soulfully by Yesudas. Rajamani has done an excellent job of the background score. Cherian Kalpakavvadi, who has scripted many notable movies, mainly for directors Venu Nagavalli and Mohan, delivers a well balanced script, which forms the real strength of Vairam.
