He started his career as a mimicry artsist in Kalabhavan. From there he met Siddique, who would later team-up as Siddique-Lal to make some of the most popular films in Malayalam film industry. Lal, along with Siddique joined as assistant director to Fazil in 1988.The Siddique-Lal team became directors with Ramji Rao Speaking, which was a pathbreaking film and a major hit. They went on to make 4 more hit films in a row -In Harihar Nagar, Godfather, Vietnam Colony and Kabooliwala. After that, both decided to part ways as director pair and Lal turned producer with Siddiqe-directed Mammootty-starrer Hitler, which was also a major hit, after which never returned to film directiom till date. Lal debuted in acting with a villain role as Paniyan in Kaliyattam, directed by Jayaraj. Kaliyattam was a retake of Othello on the backdrop of Teyyams and Lal came out with a brilliant performance as Paniyan, the character standing for Iago. Following that, he got many chances as actor. He became prominent producer and distributor in Malayalam film industry in early 2000's and established a film production and distribution company named Lal Creations. He produced the blockbuster Tenkasippattanam, in which he did a major role with Suresh Gopi. Lal started acting in Tamil films with Sandakozhi starring Vishal and Meera Jasmine. Lal's other major roles include Jeevan in Ormacheppu, Vanveedan in Black, Sathyan in Thommanum Makkalum and title role in Banglowil Outha.
